Upon arriving at the hospital, I was surrounded by medical students and doctors. I remember thinking there was a party in the room as they quickly assessed my condition. After my husband answered their questions, I was placed on an IV drip. Although I still don’t know what the medicine was, it felt magical as it coursed through my body. Gradually, I began to feel my arms and legs again. It was official: I had suffered a stroke on the right side of my brain. Thus, my new life began.
Rediscovering the Basics
The things we take for granted—brushing my hair and teeth, smiling, walking, eating, and laughing—had to be relearned. I knew I was fortunate to receive excellent care, but my old life was gone.
At that point, I couldn’t drive, cook, or perform household tasks. The only activity I could focus on was painting. And I immersed myself in it.
Embracing Creativity
With the help of YouTube videos and Zoom classes, I poured my heart into painting. My eyesight improved, and my color vision gradually returned, which felt like a miracle. The flexibility of online classes allowed me to pace myself according to my pain levels.
It turned out to be a win-win situation. My art improved, and I began applying to art galleries. To my delight, I was accepted at several, and my creative journey was back on track. I could actually do something meaningful again! Painting daily brings me joy and allows me to make others smile. 'From stroke, to strokes of genius – I found healing through art'.
Reflecting on Change
Before my stroke, I had painted for over 40 years and taught art to both adults and children from my home studio. Now officially retired, I still can't drive or manage household chores and face ongoing challenges with walking due to another medical issue. However, life is good. Painting is my passion, and I cherish every moment of it.
In closing, I urge you to tell your loved ones daily that you appreciate and love them unconditionally. Life can change in an instant, and it's essential to cherish the time we have. Never give up.
