As part of the Champlain Regional Stroke Network’s ongoing efforts to share meaningful stories and insights for stroke survivors and their care partners, we at Bruyère Health are honoured to highlight the incredible legacy of one of our own: Serge, a former patient, volunteer, and champion for stroke recovery.

Serge’s journey with Bruyère began as a patient in the Stroke Rehabilitation Program, but it didn’t end there. After completing his rehabilitation, Serge made a promise to himself: to give back to the program that, in his words, “saved my life.” From that moment, he became one of our most dedicated volunteers, offering his time, compassion, and wisdom to both patients and staff.

When Serge walked through the unit doors, he brought more than helping hands; he brought hope. He spent his days supporting unit tasks but never missed a chance to stop and connect with patients. Whether it was sharing his own story of recovery, offering a few words of encouragement, or simply listening, Serge understood something profound: healing after a stroke goes beyond therapy; it’s about human connection, dignity, and presence.

Serge’s impact extended far beyond our walls. He joined regional focus groups and committees with the Champlain Regional Stroke Network, lending his voice to ensure that the perspectives of stroke survivors were heard. He also participated in collaborative projects, including the creation of a mural with a local artist that visually captured the stroke recovery journey at Bruyère. His insights and lived experience helped shape that story for others to see and feel.

In 2023, Serge played a key role in Bruyère’s first-ever Stroke Retreat, where patients, caregivers, and staff came together to shape the future of the program. His thoughtful feedback and deep understanding of recovery helped guide our three-year roadmap for quality and patient experience.

Serge’s compassion was boundless. He continued to visit patients even after they left the hospital, sometimes showing up with two coffees in hand just to ensure no one felt alone, especially during the holidays. It’s no surprise that our team named him our “Unsung Hero”, a recognition for those who go above and beyond without ever seeking praise. That was Serge through and through: selfless, steadfast, and sincere.

Serge believed in the power of giving back, and in doing so, he gave our team, our patients, and our community a lasting gift: the reminder that recovery is not just physical, but also emotional and communal. His resilience and kindness continue to inspire us all.

At Bruyère, we are grateful to have shared this journey with him. Serge’s legacy reminds us that the impact of volunteering reaches far beyond the tasks; it touches lives, strengthens communities, and embodies the true spirit of stroke rehabilitation.

Merci beaucoup, Serge. You will always be our superstar volunteer and forever part of the Bruyère family.
