On October 1, 2025, The Queensway Carleton Hospital officially became a Designated Stroke Unit. This is great news for stroke care in the Champlain region!

When someone has a stroke, being treated in a stroke unit can make a big difference. It helps people survive, recover faster, and lowers the chance of having another stroke.

A stroke unit has a team of experts who know how to care for stroke patients. They help with recovery by managing problems caused by the stroke, getting patients moving early, and connecting them to rehabilitation services. This special care leads to better results for patients. Including the Queensway Carleton Hospital, there are now five hospitals in Champlain that have stroke units.

Although it may be tempting to drive yourself or a loved one to one of these hospitals, if you are experiencing signs of a stroke, DO NOT DRIVE. CALL 9-1-1 immediately. Lifesaving treatment begins the moment you are with a paramedic. Our regional paramedics will transport you to the hospital best able to treat your stroke.

When you call 9-1-1 give them your location. Tell them the signs you see in your loved one, and when you first noticed them. View and share the signs of stroke poster. Even if your friends do not speak English well, they can call 9-1-1 and say the language that they speak. Assistance is available in 240 languages.
